Nagoya University Program for Leading Graduate Schools (LGS)

The Leadership Development Program for Space Exploration and Research, a Nagoya University Program for Leading Graduate Schools (LGS), aims to produce international leaders with the ability to drive the space industry and supporting its forefront industries through the development of space technology and expansion of space utilization.
To achieve this goal, we will provide various courses to nurture execution, broad perspective, management, problem-solving and global communication skills with a five-year doctoral program from the beginning of the master course.
In the recruitment of M1 spring application FY2019, we will accept 1st grade of Master course (M1) students of Nagoya University as of April, 2019. Details are given in the web sute and guidebook indicated below.


Guidebook for Leadership Development Program for Space Exploration and Research


Applicants who meet the following conditions.
(1)M1 Graduate students at Nagoya University as of April, 2019. All graduate schools and any nationality.
(2)Students who intend to remain in the program until completing their doctoral degree.

Program students accepted as M1 spring admissions undergo a trial-admission period lasting to the end of the M1 term. At the end of the M1 term, student achievement level is reviewed for the courses taken. Regarding student's qualification on advancement to a doctoral program and propriety of prospect to cope with this program are asked to one's doctoral advisor. After confirmed these matters, students formally become program students upon advancement to the second year (M2). Students may leave the program during the trial-admission period. Please note that tney may not excuse from leaving the program after advancement to M2, even if selected for any DC1 or DC2 (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellowship).

[Number of Students to be Admitted]

10 applicants.
In order to accept a diverse group of students, we will give priority to each graduate school course at Nagoya University set below;
  • 5 students from graduate school of Science, and Mathematics
  • 5 students from graduate school of Engineering
  • 1 student from graduate school of Environmental Studies.

[Financial Support]

  • Applicants who achieve excellent grades in the LGS activities will be exempted from tuition fees in the doctoral course.

[Course Outline]

It is requisite to take additional courses for this program besides the curriculum in your major.

  • Basics for space science and engineering (online textbook)
  • Video lectures on space science and engineering
  • Overview of space exploration and research
  • Lectures on space science and engineering
  • Short courses on space science and engineering

Curriculum to foster international communication and practical leadership skills

  • English training courses (if required)
  • Leadership development seminars
  • Global leadership training courses
  • Internship (corporations-domestic,overseas/institutions-overseas)

Curriculum to cultivate problem-solving skills, project management and execution

  • ChubuSat instrument development project

[3] Official undergraduate transcripts from colleages/universities attended (Document submission by scanning will be taken under the applicant's responsibility.)

  • Applicants need to upload the documents [1],[2] and [3] in one PDF file via the submission folder
  • The reference [4] in either Japanese or English form needs to be submitted as PDF file by the supervisor via the same submission folder. Please make a consultation with your supervisor about participation to this leading program before applying by all means.

[Application Period]

From Thursday, April 11th, 2019 to Friday, April 26th, 2019 [17:00] (Japan Time).
The due date for submitting of a reference form by the supervisor is the same above.

[Selection Process]

  • Applicants will be selected on the basis of their aspirations detailed in the application form, the reference by the applicant's appointed supervisor, and the results of their interview.
  • Applicants are evaluated by the following points: aspirations for this program, prospects of exercising international leadership in space related industry after completing this program, applicants' vision of leadership, basic academic skills, logicality, simplicity and persuasiveness of explanation, communication skills, and English conversation skills.


  • An interview has been scheduled from (Tue) May 7th, to (Fri) May 10th, 2019. The interview will be carried out in any of the date mentioned above. Indicate the time slots that are inconvenient for the applicant on the application form.
  • If you are not at Nagoya University, you will take an interview using Skype. For the Skype interview, applicants will be identified through video images.
  • During the interview, you will be asked to talk about contents written in your application form and related matters in either Japanese or English, then questions and answers will follow.

[Other Notes]

  • The guidance for this LGS program will be held in Japanese on April 22 (Mon). If you would like English briefing, please contact the Admission Office.
  • The results will be notified in writing within a few weeks after interviews. Successful applicants will be admitted as the date of June 1st, 2019.
  • Regarding all personal information submitted related to filing for this program, it is only for use of activities of this LGS program and will be treated carefully under responsibility.
