The Leadership Development Program for Space Exploration and Research, a Nagoya University Program for Leading Graduate Schools (LGS), aims to produce international leaders with the ability to drive the space industry and supporting its forefront industries through the development of space technology and expansion of space utilization.
To achieve this goal, we will provide various courses to nurture execution, broad perspective, management, problem-solving and global communication skills with a five-year doctoral program from the beginning of the master course.
In the recruitment of M1 and M2 fall application FY2017, we will accept Master course (M1&M2) students of Nagoya University as of July, 2017. Details are given in the web sute and guidebook indicated below.

Guidebook for Leadership Development Program for Space Exploration and Research

[Eligibility]

Applicants who meet the following conditions.
(1)M1 and M2 Graduate students at Nagoya University as of July, 2017. All graduate schools and any nationality.
(2)Students who intend to remain in the program until completing their doctoral degree.
(3)For M2 fall applicants, completion of the following coursework is a prerequisite for the application. Applicants must complete the coursework below before the end of March, 2018.
  • Basics for Space Science and Engineering (online course)
  • Video Lectures on Space Science and Engineering: completing a total of four video lectures for the desired course affiliation and at least two elective video lectures in other courses.
  • Lecture Courses on Satellite System, and Short Courses on Satellite Development and Applications: completing a total of at least two credits

To M1 fall applicants:
Program students accepted as M1 fall admissions undergo a trial-admission period lasting to the end of the M1 term. At the end of the M1 term, student achievement level is reviewed for the courses taken. Regarding student's qualification on advancement to a doctoral program and propriety of prospect to cope with this program are asked to one's doctoral advisor. After confirmed these matters, students formally become program students upon advancement to the second year (M2). Students may leave the program during the trial-admission period.

To M2 fall applicants:
If accepted as M2 fall admission, you will formally become program students with no trial-admission period at the admittance, but please note that you will have to satisfy the criteria (3) shown above for the three coursework until end of March, 2018.

Please note that tney may not excuse from leaving the program after the formal acceptance as Program students, even if selected for any DC1 or DC2 (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellowship).

A few applicants for both M1 and M2.

[Financial Support]

  • Program students receive 85,000 yen per month as a basic scholarship.
  • A standard scholarship of 150,000 yen per month will be provided when displaying an intension to fulfill higher level requirements (B Requirements) after advancement to 1st grade of doctoral course (D1) or above.
  • Students will receive supports for studies and activities as grants for independent studies, internship expense at companies and foreign institutes, travel expense to international meetings and conference for researches.

  • Applicants need to upload the documents [1],[2] and [3] in PDF format via the online entry form
  • After applicants' submission, automatic E-mail request for a reference will be sent to the supervisor designated by the applicant in the online entry form. The reference [4] needs to be submitted by the supervisor in PDF format using either Japanese or English form. Please make a consultation with your supervisor about participation to this leading program before applying by all means.

[Application Period]

From Tuesday, July 18th, 2017 to Tuesday, August 8th, 2017 [17:00] (Japan Time).
Note that the deadline for submitting of a reference form by the supervisor is following.
17:00, Thursday, August 10th, 2017.

[Selection Process]

  • Applicants will be selected on the basis of their aspirations detailed in the application form, the reference by the applicant's appointed supervisor, and the results of their interview.
  • Applicants are evaluated by the following points: aspirations for this program, prospects of exercising international leadership in space related industry after completing this program, applicants' vision of leadership, basic academic skills, logicality, simplicity and persuasiveness of explanation, communication skills, and English conversation skills.

[Interviews]

  • An interview has been scheduled from (Mon) August 21th, to (Fri) August 25th, 2017. The interview will be carried out in any of the date mentioned above. Indicate the time slots that are inconvenient for the applicant on the application form.
  • If you are not at Nagoya University, you will take an interview using Skype. For the Skype interview, applicants will be identified through video images.
  • During the interview, you will be asked to talk about contents written in your application form and related matters in either Japanese or English, then questions and answers will follow.

[Other Notes]

  • The results will be notified in writing within a few weeks after interviews. Successful applicants will be admitted as the date of October 1st, 2017.
  • As a rule, this program financial support is provided as a scholarship. You cannot receive the scholarship double with other scholarships from Japan Student Services Organization and/or other agencies. If you have a plan to receive other scholarships after admission, contact the Admission Office.
  • The scholarship recipient may be responsible for expenses related to social insurance premium such as income tax, national pension and National Health Insurance. Considering all of these, as for the scholarship recipients with a monthly amount of 85,000 yen (Basic scholarship) and 150,000 (Standard scholarship), the amount left in one's hand after having deducted the tuition (assuming at a half-tuition exemption) might be approximately 40,000 and 90,000 yen, respectively from the second year of receipt. However, it depends on tax treaty and family structure. Please contact the Admission Office for further details.
  • The list of students who receive the scholarship from this program will be publicly available on the program web site by the regulation of subsides. Please be forewarned that the financial support will be terminated on March 2019, and not be offered afterward. We may be forced to reduce or terminate the financial support if our funding agency, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science reduces or cuts off subsidies for this program before March, 2019.
  • Regarding all personal information submitted related to filing for this program, it is only for use of activities of this LGS program and will be treated carefully under responsibility.
