"The Leadership Development Program for Space Exploration and Research", Nagoya University Program for Leading Graduate Schools aims to nurture international leaders to lead the space industry and forefront industries supporting development of space technology and expansion of space utilization, also in order to promote expanding use of the space infrastructure which a modern society nowadays depends on deeply.
To achieve this goal, this five-year doctoral education program subject to graduate students provides a curriculum to develop program students combining project planning, execution, broad perspective, problem solving, management and global communication skills.
This leadership development program for space exploration and research opens year round for accepting new 1st grade of Master and Doctoral (M1 and D1) program students who want to study in this program and is subject to an international student in the pre-admission category. We would like faculty members to deploy this call information to international students in your laboratory if there are any candidates. Students who meet all of the conditions below
  • Students who intend to enroll in Master or Doctral course of Nagoya University. In principle, applicants will take our LGS recruitment examination prior to the entrance examination of Nagoya University Graduate School. You will be accepted as a program student after you are admitted to Nagoya University.
    In January 2018, all international students can apply this category prior to the entrance to Nagoya University. The special international student category is still required to apply prior to the entrance examination.
  • International students who hold a foreign nationality, and graduated high school abroad.
  • International students who hold a foreign nationality, and graduated high school abroad.
  • Students who must be able to make a definite commitment to remain in the program until completing their degree. Please note that students enrolled in the program may not to leave this, even if selected for any DC1 or DC2 (Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellowship).

[Number of Students to be admitted]

5 students. This admission will continue until positions are filled.

[Financial Support]

  • Of the M1/D1 international students accepted for pre-admission category, those recognized as being exceptional (maximum of three students) selected within the special international student category will receive 200,000 JPY per month after admitted to this program.
  • Students who are not selected under the special international student category, you may still receive the same financial support as that provided to regular students.
    • Basic scholarship: 85,000 JPY per month.
    • Standard scholarship: 150,000 JPY per month for when displaying an intension to fulfill higher level requirements (B Requirements) after enrolling in this program.
  • As other forms, students will receive supports for studies and activities as grants for independent studies, internship expense at companies and foreign institutes, travel expense to international meetings and conference for researches.

[Application period]

The application by M1/D1 international students for the pre-admission category will be accepted via the web site until positions are filled. Please submit the application form by one month prior to either the entrance examination or the entrance.

[Selection process]

  • Applicants will be selected on the basis of their aspirations detailed in the application form, the reference by the applicant's supervisor, and the results of their interview.
  • Applicants are evaluated by the following points: aspirations for this program, prospects of exercising international leadership in space related industry after completing this program, applicants' vision of leadership, basic academic skills, logicality, simplicity and persuasiveness of explanation, communication skills, and English conversation ability.


  • The interview schedule will be arranged after filing the application.
  • If you are not at Nagoya University, you will take an interview using Skype. For the Skype interview, applicants will be identified through video images.
  • During the interview, you will be asked to talk about contents written in your application form and related matters in either Japanese or English, then questions and answers will follow.

[Other notes]

  • The results will be notified in writing within a few weeks after interviews. Successful applicants will be admitted as the date of October 1st for fall entrance and April 1st for spring entrance.
  • M1 program students admitted from the pre-admission category will be in a trial-admission period until the end of M1. At the end of the M1 term, student achievement level in the course taken is reviewed, and regarding student's qualification on advancement to a doctoral program and propriety of prospect to cope with this program are asked to a student's doctoral supervisor. Once this is done, the student is granted full-admission status upon advancement to the second year (M2). On the other hand, D1 program students are granted full admission status sooner after admitted.
  • As a rule, this program financial support is provided as a scholarship. You cannot receive the scholarship double with other scholarships from Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and/or other agencies. If you have a plan to receive other scholarships after admission, contact the Admission Office.
  • The scholarship recipient may be responsible for expenses related to social insurance premium such as income tax, national pension and National Health Insurance. Considering all of these, as for the scholarship recipients with a monthly amount of 85,000 yen (Basic Scholarship), 150,000 (Standard Scholarship) and 200,000 (special international student category), the amount left in one's hand after having deducted the tuition (assuming at a half-tuition exemption) might be about 40,000, 90,000, and 130,000 yen respectively from the second year of receipt. However, it depends on tax treaty and family structure. Please contact the Admission Office for further details.
  • The list of students who receive the scholarship from this program will be publicly available on the program website by the regulation of subsides. Please be forewarned that the financial support will be terminated on March 2019, and not be offered afterward. We may be forced to reduce or terminate the financial support if our funding agency, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) reduces or cuts off subsidies for this program before March, 2019.
  • Regarding all personal information submitted related to filing for this program, it is only for use of activities of this Leading Graduate School program and will be treated carefully under responsibility.
