Call for 1st grade Doctoral course (D1) students

The Leadership Development Program for Space Exploration and Research, a Nagoya University Program for Leading Graduate Schools, is intended to nurture international leaders with the ability to drive the space industry and its supporting forefront industries through the development of space technology and expansion of space utilization.
To achieve this goal, we will provide various courses to cultivate broad perspective, project management and problem-solving skills, and international communication skills with five-year program from the beginning of the Master course.
This program will be accepting new 1st grade Doctoral course (D1) student applicants who intend to enroll in Graduate school of Nagoya University from this fall. We would appreciate if supervisors who accept students could inform them about this announcement. Details of this program are given in the following web site.



  • Students or adult students who intend to enroll in a doctoral course of graduate school of Nagoya University in the fall of 2014. Any nationality is acceptable. In principle, applicants will take our LGS recruitment examination before entering Nagoya University. You will be accepted as an official member after you are admitted to Nagoya University. Please note that applicants have to take and pass the entrance examination of Nagoya University to be a program student.
  • Those who are able to commit to complete a doctoral course and this program.
  • Internal students at Nagoya University will have to complete a part of course work of this program. Please contact the admission office for more details.
Please note that you will not be able to leave this program, even if selected for Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellowship DC1 or DC2 while you are in the program.


A few applicants.
To accept a variety of students, we will give priority to adult and international students.

[Student financial aid]

Basic scholarship: 85,000 JPY per month. Qualified students will receive 150,000 JPY per month.
Financial support for internship at foreign institutes and companies, and grants for travel expense to international meetings and research proposals will be also provided.

Lecture courses for solid expertise and broad vision

Basics for space science and technology (online textbook), video lectures for space science and technology, overview of Space research and exploration, and lectures/short courses on space science and technology.

Curriculums for international communication skills, hands-on experiences and leadership development

English training courses (if required), leadership development seminars, global leadership training courses, and internship.

Curriculums for problem-solving skills, project management and practical hands-on experiences

August 13 (Wednesday), 2014 at 5:00 PM is the deadline for the reference by your supervisor.

[Selection process]

  • Applicants will be selected on the basis of their aspirations detailed in the application form, the reference by the applicant's supervisor, and the results of their interview.
  • Applicants are evaluated by the following points: aspirations for this program, prospects of exercising international leadership in space related industry after completing this program, applicants' vision of leadership, basic academic skills, logicality, simplicity and persuasiveness of explanation, communication skills, and English conversation ability.


  • Interviews will be held from August 25 to 29, 2014. Please indicate the time slots that do not work for you in the appropriate boxes in the application form.
  • If you are not available throughout the above schedule, you can participate in the interview using Skype. In this case, please indicate your Skype name and available time slots (Japan time) in the application form.
  • During the interview, you will be asked to talk about contents written in your application form and related matters, then questions and answers will follow.
  • You can choose either Japanese or English as a language. If you choose Japanese, there will be some discussions in English to evaluate your English conversation skills.

  • This call is aimed at D1 students who will enter Nagoya University from this fall. The call for new D1 students who will enter from next spring will be announced on January 2015.
  • Financial aid is provided by means of a scholarship as a default. You cannot receive the scholarship if you wish to receive scholarships from Japan Student Services Organization and other agencies. Students who want to receive other scholarships may be employed as Research Assistant (RA) to receive the financial aid. Note that you may not get paid during your business travel if it is not related topics program. Please contact us for more details.
  • Please be forewarned that we may be forced to reduce or terminate the financial aid if our funding agency reduces or cuts off subsidies for this program.
