Advanced Ultrahigh Precision Machining Technology

The machining technology of precision optics is considered to originate from 16th century. For many years, "classical" polishing techniques were the major method of precision optics manufacturing. A new technology of ultrahigh precision machine tool has been making progress since 1980s to enable direct machining of precision aspherical optics or direct molding by precision die with accuracy below 100nm. This technology led to the successful manufacturing of high quality digital cameras, semiconductor production machines, optical storage discs and so on. The lecture will overview those ultraprecision technologies such as position control, metrology, fabrication process, material and molding.
