Development and in-orbit performance of small sized spacecraft:From the viewpoint of ADCS (Attitude determination and control system)

Recently, small satellites have been employed in a variety of missions, such as astronomical observations and remote sensing due to lower cost and shorter development period. Although, one of the keys to achieving their missions is accurate attitude determination and control, it is difficult to achieve this goal under the strong limitations of mass, space, and power consumption in small satellites. This lecture will provide an overview of small satellite bus systems, specifically ADCS (Attitude determination and control system), and how to achieve ADCS under these strict limitations. Furthermore the lecture presents their in-orbit performances in some Japanese university satellites.
